The 4th International Symposium on Subsurface Microbiology
was held August 22-27, 1999 at Marriot's Mountain Resort in Vail, Colorado. The Symposium
focused on
the ecology, function and diversity of microorganisms in the subsurface, both
under natural and disturbed conditions. The Symposium opened on Sunday night,
August 22, with a Keynote lecture by Dr. Norman Pace (CU Boulder) and welcome reception. Each morning (Monday,
Tuesday, Thursday and Friday) plenary lectures were scheduled, followed by
lunch and parallel afternoon sessions. Late-afternoon poster sessions and
refreshments were scheduled each of these four afternoons. No papers were scheduled for Wednesday, August 25, to provide time for scientific and
sightseeing excursions.

Location
Vail, Colorado is one of the most picturesque
destinations in the United States. The Denver International Airport is a 2-1/2
hour drive from Vail.
